Review: Freshmenu.com

We at Delhi Food Club love to try new things. We jump at the opportunity to explore interesting eateries. Food delivery services are our favourite because then we can chill at home with our beer and order what we like. Fresh Menu is a brand new service that helps people like us to do just that.

Fresh, delicious food, delivered at your convenience is amazing but we are usually not easily pleased. FreshMenu.com has some very attractive pictures on its website and what we loved the most is that they delivered exactly when they said they would. Their punctuality was impressive. If you want a fast food delivery service in gurgaon or a fast food delivery service in delhi, pick Fresh Menu.

Coming to the food, the Dim sum is what we started with. This isn’t fine dining at all. These dim sums were proper street food kind of dim sums, comfort food at its best.

Then came the Farfalle, the sauce of which was very subtle, a little too subtle but we liked.

The desserts consisted of a mind-blowing chocolate tart with a crumbly cookie base and rich and creamy chocolate  ganache. The brownie was good too.

Overall, our experience was quite fulfilling.

Navratri has never been better! @Sattvik, Select CityWalk, Delhi

I am a hardcore non-vegetarian but Chef Anoop Singh Bisht from Sattvik made dining experience extremely enjoyable (I wasn’t expecting it to be at all!). The special 5-course Navratri meal at North Indian fine dining restaurant,Sattvik was something everyone should try. I associate Sattvik food with loads of oil but it was truly commendable how chef prepared everything in minimal oil and managed to keep everything delicious.

20160415040647

Sattvik Restaurant is located in Select CITYWALK, Delhi’s most exciting Shopping & Entertainment Destination situated in the heart of South Delhi. Need for a good fine-dining restaurant  in South Delhi that serves only vegetarian food gave birth to the idea of this restaurant.  Since it serves pure vegetarian food the name was derived from   sāttvika  – relating to or endowed with the quality sattva (Sanskrit word referring to  pure, true, genuine, honest, good, virtuous). Since it’s inception in 2008 it has been a place where people come and relax and have a hearty meal and holistic fine dining experience.

20160415040647-1

On offer will a delicious range of beverage, snacks, mains and desserts- a total of over 15 items such as Masaladaar Chaach, Saboodana Papad, Kuttu ki Papdi Chaat, Bhuni Shakarkandi ki Chaat, Jimikand ka Kabab with Mirch ki Chutney, Kacche Kele ka Kebab, Masala Arbi, Kuttu aur Singara ki Puri, Samak ki Phirni, Kheer Gud Makhana and many other such satvik delights.

20160415040641-2

My favourites on the menu were Kuttu aur Singara ki Puri, Paneer Makhni and Samak ki Phirni. I was quite amused to see how beautifully chef had managed to maintain balance in the gravy without using any salt. The puri went beautifully with it. The phirni was subtle and lightly sweetened and was the perfect end to my meal.

The chef sent a beautiful and fragrant cup of tea with Gur Makhana. I am certainly going to come back again and again for that brilliant tea time snack. The menu will vary every three days for Navratri. Those fasting this Navratri (even those who are not!) could not have asked for more!

What: Navratri Food Festival – Special 5 course meal @ Rs. 595

Where: Sattvik, Select CITYWALK, S-5, 2nd Floor, Saket, New Delhi

When: 12noon – 11pm , 8th April – 15th April, 2016

#RakhiwithMcCain – Cooking up a Storm with my Sibling!

IMG_2904

I have to be honest. I have never really cooked with my brother. We are both huge foodies and we cook all the time but it has never been with my brother. The fun part about this Rakhi was that McCain sent us a lot of interesting stuff and we were asked to create fun recipes with it. We decided to make a delicious Indian Burger or Pav Burger with McCain Aloo Tikki. It sounds simple and it really was. Cooking with McCain is a walk in the park!

Ingredients:

4 pieces McCain Aloo Tikki Shallow Fried
1 red onion, finely chopped
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tomato
1 thinly sliced onion
1 handful Parmesan, grated
1 heaped tablespoon Dijon mustard
Groundnut or other flavourless oil
Pav bun,
Toasted Tomato ketchup

Serves 4

Directions

Cook the Aloo Tikki in olive oil and keep it aside to rest. Cook the Pav Burger in a little oil flavoured in onions. To assemble the burger first use a mix of the mustard and toasted tomato ketchup. Then add onions, tomatoes, parmesan to it. Then add the McCains Aloo Tikki but and top off with some more mustard and the top part of the Pav. It’s that simple!

I loved cooking with my brother. What a fun experience this was.

In the leafy environs of Lutyens Delhi lies a culinary gem called Amreli in Hotel Diplomat. The Hotel itself is so understated that it is easy to miss but once inside it is a as cosy a place as there can be in Delhi. The menu has been created by Chef Saby (Sabyasachi Gorai) and is quite eclectic. Continental and American food sits side by side with a great Indian menu so that you keep coming back to Amreli even if you have a craving for different cuisines.

We began our mean with a caesar salad along with mutton seekh kebabs and sizzling gambas. The sizzling sambas or prawns were sizzling alright – in the juices of wonderful cherry tomatoes, garlic, olives, mushrooms and rosemary (among other herbs). Needless to say they were smashing. The prawns were cooked perfectly and were coated enough in those heavenly juices to provide a taste contrast.

The Diplomat Caesar salad was amped up with peppers and zucchini and the seekh kebab was great as well.

For mains we ordered crispy filo raan, chettinad chicken with malabar paratha and a Louisiana chicken sandwich.

The chettinad chicken was highly recommended and it was my favourite dish of the day. The chettinad here has become my favourite chettinad chicken in the city. This version is more refined than the punchy Chettinad chicken you get at other restaurants but the balance of flavours and the liberal use of coconut won me over. The wonderful tang in the sauce lingers on you r taste buds for very long and its a very pleasant taste indeed.

The filo raan is a meat eaters delight, although I found the filo quite oily. Maybe a thicker wrap could have absorbed more oil and made it taste better, but that is a personal choice.

The Louisiana chicken sandwich was quite tasty and the spicy chips made the sandwich quite special.

The desserts were classic desserts – baked cheesecake, chocolate fondant and creme brûlée. The creme burlee was the best dessert by a distance. It had perfectly hard caramel on top that crackled and the custard was as it should be – creamy, smooth and luscious.

The fondant was made well but it was slightly let down because of the chocolate used, as it left a slight aftertaste.

The baked cheesecake was quite decent too.
In summation , I loved my time at Amreli. I came with my friends for a quick meal but it turned into a leisurely lunch as we sat and chatted away as time went by. A charming restaurant with great food often does that to you.

The Wolf’s Evening at SANDY’s Cocktails & Kitchen, Gurgaon

#The Wolf's Eve @ Sandy's.

I like to start by clearly mentioning that it was an utmost ambivalent experience that I have had over at Sandy’s, there were some real impressive things and concomitantly some things this place needed to atone.

#The Wolf's Eve @ Sandy's.

#The Wolf's Eve @ Sandy's.

While I may be called a neophyte in adjudging, but certainly my experience with food makes me a bit proficient in taking a judgment call and while the evening here was entertaining but also a bit tedious to an extent.

Coming to the evening, when my brother and I reached this venue, it was all lit up, exuberance singing from every corner of the venue and the juxtapose lounge which is more of a lavish green sitting arena with some spectacular arrangement of lights and seating, the main entrance comes with a view of delight.

#The Wolf's Eve @ Sandy's.

Just as we entered, we were escorted downstairs to their invigorating live bar and amazing portrayal of talent, as it was told to us that every Tuesday night the Sandy’s conduct a special talent programme where one gets to enjoy and explore the inner self, similarly where one can see sophistication upstairs there is a lot of soothing music and partying aura downstairs, with a stage to perform and lot of area to sit and enjoy this is a perfect place to hang out with friends and that what we expected and visited.

#The Wolf's Eve @ Sandy's.

#The Wolf's Eve @ Sandy's.

Eventually, after few moments and grabbing some comfortable seats we ordered our drinks and let me be very much clarified and incontrovertible to the fact that I have had mocktails and mixtures many a times but this place is a real deal to get digging for their drinks, but the only low aspect I explored or felt was not too much to offer, the drinks were excellent but for someone who prefers non alcoholic drinks, they aren’t going to suffice.

#The Wolf's Eve @ Sandy's.

Gradually, after taking a sip we were ready for a meal to start and some appetisers to go on with and this is where the ship started to sink. We first ordered a Bruschetta, spring rolls and truffle and jalapeño cheese balls, out of which the cheese balls were marvellously cooked and served with mint mayonnaise dip and the spring rolls stuffed with veggies and served with salsa sauce were also pretty good but the bruschetta was not upto the mark, I’ve had better is what I’d like to say. The garlic bread bought supplanting, the bruschetta was of no prudence as it lacked in comforting us rather making us disappointed but, the most appreciative thing I liked specifically about their staff was they were all open to suggestions and very very accepting of our choices.

#The Wolf's Eve @ Sandy's.

Well after this, we came to our main course and ordered a white sauce penne pasta and a four seasons pizza which were both were not upto our expectations. The pizza was slightly too bland for our liking. I love Italian pizzas and do not at all have a problem with authenticity but this one was not entirely to our liking. But, we saw pretty admirable efforts of presentation, the quantity remained intransigent and that is what i adored a lot about the main course, the presentation was partially outlandish and pretty much a delight to admire.

#The Wolf's Eve @ Sandy's.

We finally stepped up to our final round of deserts, ordering a tiramisu was an amazing deal to crack but a Rioja Poached Pears with spices were really not really my cup of tea. The tiramisu is undoubtedly a great dessert to dig into and the quirky presentation using “molecular gastronomy” – serving with foam around the pears was amazing.

#The Wolf's Eve @ Sandy's.

#The Wolf's Eve @ Sandy's.

In totality as mentioned before it was a rather mixed experience but more of learning for me. I have a lot of suggestions to put in and will surely provide them with all these opinions of mine. Wish to visit them again  to try some more interesting items. Till that time all the best to Sandy’s! Hoping and wishing them luck and fortune.

Yauatcha – The best standalone Chinese restaurant in Delhi NCR

Yauatcha is one of those restaurants that have the word legend suffixed to it all the time. A Michelin starred restaurant, voted among the top 50 restaurants in the world and London’s amazing Hakkasan as a sister restaurant to boot. You will understand the level of expectations I had while visiting the place. Moreover, authentic Chinese cuisine is something that is hard to find in Delhi anyway.

DSC_0390

Located on Level 2 of Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj, Yauatcha has a warm but very sophisticated feel to it. The restaurant is massive with many tables, which are very well spaced out so you can be yourself without being pried on by others.

DSC_0391 DSC_0394

The dimsums are what Yauatcha is most known for and we started the afternoon sampling five of their best.  We ordered a platter of fried turnip cake, sesame prawn toast, char feung (prawns), chicken char sui bun and chicken and prawn sui mai. and they were some of the best dim sums I’ve had. In fact, I think they are the best dim sums available in Delhi.

DSC_0401 DSC_0399

What makes them special, literally everything. The balance of flavours, the freshness and the distinct taste of each dimsum is reason for me to return to Yauatcha. I think the best dims have the meat cooked al dente and every dimsum here had that bite, phenomenal. I loved the char feung best for the amazing textural difference of that steamed top against the crunchy interior.

DSC_0402 DSC_0403 DSC_0410

My main dish was a steamed river sole in black bean sauce along with Penang style old town prawn noodles. The river sole has me salivating till today. Perfectly steamed, flaky and elevated by the peppery black bean sauce, it was exceptional.

DSC_0408

The noodles too were seriously tasty and being the lover of prawn I am, I was chuffed to see that it wasn’t overcooked in any of the dishes.

The desserts were the biggest surprise as I never thought a Chinese restaurant will do French desserts so well.  I ordered a religieuse and a milk chocolate praline and both were spot on. The praline is now my favourite chocolate dessert in Delhi. Not only was the combination of the mousse and the sacher biscuit superb, but also the hazelnut and salted caramel bits were like little nuggets of joy. What really lifted this dish for me was the brilliant lemon yogurt sorbet as it cleansed the palette and made he dessert fresh.

DSC_0411 DSC_0412 DSC_0414

The  was special too, especially the choux pastry filled with the silkiest and heavenly taste cremeux, a triumph indeed.

DSC_0415

Yauatcha is a special addition to Delhi’s ever growing restaurant scene and a gastronomer’s delight. I cannot recommend it highly enough to anyone who loves food (not just Chinese food). Go get your Chinese fix now!

If you look up “Bueno” in the dictionary you will know it means “good” in Spanish and when Bueno Kitchen Delivered food to me last week I was expecting it to be pretty darn good.

They have American, Asian, Indian, European, Mexican and Middle Eastern food on their menu.

We started with some Pita Bread with Hummus (Rs 170). The Pita was extremely fresh and the hummus was well prepared. I have certainly had better hummus but this wasn’t at all bad. The combo was very filling. The portion size was good. Like a light evening snack with tea? Go for this!
BUENO KITCHEN - HOME DELIVERY AND CATERING

Their catering menu has close to 400 dishes. When I first looked at the menu I was completely zapped. What appealed to me the most was the Mexican Rice Chicken with Paprika Yoghurt (Rs 230). When it arrived it looked really appealing. I would have liked it to be slightly more flavoursome. I wouldn’t call it perfect but what I got wasn’t half bad.
BUENO KITCHEN - HOME DELIVERY AND CATERING

Then came the Shredded Chicken in Hot Garlic Sauce with Veg Hakka Noodles (Rs 260). This was one of the nicest things we had that day. We really loved the balance of flavours and one can never have too much garlic.
BUENO KITCHEN - HOME DELIVERY AND CATERING

We did not like the Mutton Seekh Wrap (Rs 150) or the Chatpata Aloo Wrap (Rs 110) very much but the Nachos and Salsa were to die for. The Spaghetti Aglio Olio Chicken – recommended.

Planning a Sunday brunch? Olive is your best bet!

16433962768_2ab3c272f4_o

Olive Bistro, the latest addition to A D Singh’s chain of Olives, is located in Gurgaon’s budding Cyber Hub. It is located on the first floor, placed strategically in front of the Cyber Hub auditorium. It just felt delightful in walking into its Outdoor seating. The picket white fences, the garden feel type of seating made way to a feeling of mushiness and warmth. I have always been a fan of alfresco dining. Be it the warmth of the sun on a wintery afternoon or a breezy sultry evening, the ambience does make a difference for me! So this place, in the heart (almost) of Gurgaon definitely bowled me over.

The staff were friendly, courteous and polite and took extreme care to reach out when needed. Well informed about the dishes and were giving ample suggestions when asked for.

We were there for the Sunday brunch and that is one lavish spread. There are multiple options for Appetizers and drinks with ample vegetarian selects. The course started off with The Olive special Caesar salad which is a must try, a mezze platter of Pita n Nachos with dips of hummus, babaghanoush, tashi and drinks. The mock tail that I had ordered “Litchi tornado” tasted artificial and nothing like Litchi, but the “Mojito” was perfect. Rest of the cocktails tasted good but the Red wine Sangria was the best of the lot for me.

The others included Potato & Jalapeno poppers (one that was immensely loved by all), batter coated pickled vegetables which gave out a hint of tanginess to the fried vegetables, crumb fried fish (being a fish lover, I really liked it), cottage cheese sliders and chicken sliders. The Cottage cheese and Chicken sliders came with portion of twos and the chicken burger was one of the best we have had in quite a while, crunchy patty with lettuce, onion and tomato. We also ordered for the Eggs Benedict with spinach – and this one took the prize, subtle with sautéed spinach, tasty and exactly the way Eggs Benedict should be made.

Done with the starters we decided on to try out on few of the items on the mains menu. Ordered for “Grilled Lemon Mustard Basa”, “Herbs roast chicken”, “BBQ pork Spare ribs” and “Garlic & Dill marinated Grilled prawns” along with one helping (read big) of Penne in white sauce with grilled chicken. The one word to describe each dish should be “amazing”. Every dish was cooked to perfection and just as beautifully served, with accompaniments of Mashed Potato and buttered vegetables, mushy peas, pesto and sundried tomatoes. The contrasting flavours were an absolute delight.

Dessert platter consisted of Flourless Chocolate torte, Lemon Tart, Blueberry Cheesecake, Banana moist cake and Waffles with Maple syrup. Waffles were fresh, warm and crispy as needed and tasted yummy with maple syrup. The lemon tart was bursting with a bitter, sweet, tangy flavor all at one go when taken a bite into.

It was a very nice experience, well who wouldn’t love good food with an amazing ambience. Will be definitely, making a visit here again. All in all the place is a must go!

Barmer Boys rock Kathputli restaurant on New Year’s!

Kathputli, the recently opened Marwari restaurant ushered in 2015 in its trademark Rajasthani folk style. The true lovers of Rajasthani food and folk music witnessed it’s perfect amalgam on New Year’s eve with the Live performance by ‘The Barmer Boys’, led by Manga ‘Mangey’ Khan (vocals, harmonium) with the twin percussive punch of Rais Khan (morchang, bhapang, khartaal, beat-boxing) and Tarif Khan (dholak). The blend of North India and Sufi music greeted the guests who enjoyed the Marwari gourmet fare at the Defence Colony Market situated restaurant.

mangey khan (sitting on harmonium) and rais khan

The trio’s thrilling jugalbandi and beautiful songs like, ‘Bolo toh Mitho Lage’, ‘Hum bhi Jaaney’, ‘Parosan le Gayi re’ and ‘Pir Jilani’ saw the engagement of the listeners with rhythmic claps and appreciation. The arresting melodies and Mangey’s powerful and traditional vocals gripped the audience’s attention while they relished on a scrumptious array of vegetarian delights – Rajasthani Khichdi, daal baati churma, gatta curry, Gujarati Kadi, palak thepla, chawal ki kheer and moong dal halwa. The evening earmarked a perfect harmony of soulful, spirited music of Barmer Boys with a rustic yet royal treatment from the kitchens of Kathputli.

IMG_9146

Vipul and Divya Gupta of Kathputli opined, “After receiving an amazing response at the grand launch of Kathputli with Mame Khan, we decided to entertain our patrons with Rajasthani folk music this New Year’s Eve as well. The enthralling performance by Barmer Boys along with the home-like delicacies from the Marwar served as a perfect concoction to usher in 2015.”

BARMER BOYS: Stars of MTV Coke Studio Season 3 and barely in their 30’s, the Barmer Boys carry forward the centuries-old musical tradition of the Manganiyars and are leading examples of Rajasthani folk and Sufi music. The band’s versatility of styles and bubbling energy infuses each performance – from soulful Sufi kalaams to uplifting wedding and celebratory songs, to boisterous jams with beat-boxing. Their debut album “At Home: Barmer Boys” was released in Dec 2012 on Amarrass Records. The group formed in 2011, and have since performed with a host of world renowned artists including Vieux Farka Toure, Bombino, BaBa ZuLa, Madou Sidiki Diabate, Rupa and the April Fishes, and The Gypsy All-Stars. They have performed across India at the Amarrass Desert Music Festival (2011, 2012), The Elders Conference, Escape Festival, Bhakti Samaroh and more. 2014 has been an exciting year for the Barmer Boys with the success of their ‘Zordaar’ debut coast-to-coast US tour, a showcase at the Borneo World Music Expo (June 14), featured at Roskilde Festival in Denmark (July 3), and at NH7 Weekender Delhi.
