Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s subsidized eatery, Amma Uanavagam has failed to go well with the lower income groups who find it difficult to afford the prices at which the food is provided. The poor complained about how the welfare scheme did not help them to beat the high food rates.

“There are times when we do not have enough money to buy food for the entire family. If the government is concerned about our well-beings, they should not hesitate to provide us with free food,” said Srimathi, whose son works as a labourer at a construction site.

Outraged by the ‘so-called welfare scheme’, Saraswati, a slum dweller at Royapettah, said that several people residing in the slum do not have permanent jobs to earn a steady income.
